Cemex Dominicana and the Ministry of Defense, through the Vocational Schools of the Armed Forces and the National Police (DIGEV), held a conference for 200 women as a follow-up to the inter-institutional agreement between both entities to train young students from San Pedro de Macorís in technical areas.
Karina Cruz, Communications, Corporate Affairs & Social Impact Manager for Cemex Caribbean Cluster (DR and PR), stated that "the Dominican industry is in a process of development, innovation and economic growth in which it seeks to strengthen the presence and participation of women in the cement industry.".
“At Cemex, we are committed to promoting equality in the workplace, encouraging women to participate on equal terms in all sectors of the economy, based on the conviction that technical training and women’s empowerment benefit not only individuals but also society as a whole. This strategic approach fosters economic and social growth, contributing to building a better future,” Cruz emphasized.
The initiative was developed as part of the various activities carried out in commemoration of International Women's Day and was facilitated by Licelotte Baiges, who offered the conference entitled "Roles, vocations and priorities of today's woman", with which she motivated the young participants to prepare themselves to promote their personal and professional growth.
Joel Santana, director of the Vocational School, also expressed his gratitude to Cemex for its commitment to diversity and inclusion by carrying out these types of activities that support the development of women in the community. "Women who receive an education and technical training are prepared to face the challenges of today's job market. At the vocational schools, we are committed to training and developing the people in our community.".
Among the topics covered during the conference were: eliminating gender stereotypes, ensuring women's fundamental rights, guaranteeing equal treatment in the workplace, plans for the future of young Dominican women, and their personal and professional dreams and goals. Lessons on entrepreneurship and women's empowerment were also discussed, along with information on Cemex's Diversity and Inclusion Policy and testimonials from women who have achieved success in various fields.
This meeting is part of the training program between Cemex and the Vocational Schools that trains students from San Pedro de Macorís in areas such as maintenance, mechanics, electrical, electronics, among others.
The progress in training women in technical skills for industry in the Dominican Republic not only benefits the women who are trained individually, but is also fundamental to the development of the country as a whole.
