SANTO DOMINGO. - Banco BHD announced that it has renewed its agreement with the Santo Domingo Water Fund (FASD) to continue promoting the recovery and conservation of the water-producing basins that supply the city of Santo Domingo, specifically the Haina River basin.

The agreement was signed by Steven Puig, president of BHD, and Roberto Herrera, president of the Santo Domingo Water Fund (FASD). They were accompanied by Patricia Abreu, executive director of FASD, and Josefina Navarro, senior vice president of Corporate Communications and Social Responsibility for the financial institution.

Among its initiatives, BHD will support the project "Support for the ecological conservation of ecosystems that regulate water flow in the Haina River basin." This basin represents 35% of the water supply for the city of Santo Domingo.

“As time goes on, water becomes the most coveted resource of all; so essential because without water there is no life. Thanks to the Water Fund for bringing life to Santo Domingo with the projects they are carrying out. At BHD, we reaffirm our commitment to sustainability and the environment, and we contribute to the recovery of one of the most important resources on our planet: water,” said Steven Puig, president of Banco BHD.

"On behalf of the Santo Domingo Water Fund, we thank Banco BHD for its long-term vision for the sustainability of water resources, which are so important for our country, especially the Greater Santo Domingo area, the largest consumer of drinking water in the entire nation," said Roberto Herrera, president of FASD.

The Haina River basin restoration project involves establishing agroforestry systems and planting approximately 23,100 plants across 21 hectares. The project also promotes best agricultural practices.

This intervention, which will last three years, is a continuation of the work begun through the collaboration agreement in 2021.

In an average of three years, BHD and the Santo Domingo Water Fund managed to develop 18 of the 15 hectares planned. With the renewal of the agreement in 2025, work will begin on another 21 hectares, completing a total of 39 hectares developed, representing 380,000 square meters of planted area.

The impact produced in the Haina River area will help prevent erosion, regulate water flow, and moderate sediment in the area.
