SANTO DOMINGO. – After appearing at the Prosecution Directorate of the Public Ministry on Thursday afternoon to be questioned, along with a sister, businessman Antonio Espaillat was placed under arrest at the Attorney General's Office (PGR), for the collapse of the roof of the Jet Set nightclub, which occurred on April 8 of this year and left 236 people dead.
Espaillat appeared around 2:00 p.m. at the Prosecution Directorate to be questioned by the director of that agency, Wilson Camacho. He arrived accompanied by his lawyer, Miguel Valerio, and his sister, Maribel Espaillat.
"We were summoned by the Attorney General's Office and we have come," Valerio said upon arrival.
The questioning took place a day after a nightclub employee claimed that he had previously warned Espaillat that the April 8 party, featuring merengue singer Rubby Pérez, could not be held, and that more than 180 people were also injured in the incident.
Yesterday, June 11, the special commission investigating the causes of the Jet Set collapse also delivered to the Public Ministry the preliminary report on the causes that generated the tragedy.
The Public Prosecutor's Office was able to access the employee's cell phone to extract conversations he had with Espaillat, according to Listín Diario.
At least 68 legal actions were also filed against the owners, including complaints and reports.
Some of these actions also involve the Dominican State and the National District Mayor's Office (ADN) for the alleged non-compliance with their legal obligations regarding the security and supervision of these establishments.
These complaints and allegations include charges of manslaughter and negligence, citing possible structural problems and the presence of heavy equipment on the roof as factors that contributed to the collapse.
The Jet Set tragedy shocked the Dominican Republic and the international community, a collective misfortune that brought mourning to the entire national geography, on a night where its victims and those affected went to enjoy the merengue of Rubby Pérez, who died in the collapse.
