SANTO DOMINGO. – Eduardo –Yayo– Sanz Lovatón, Director General of Customs , announced yesterday, Thursday, that Amazon, the giant American e-commerce corporation, will arrive in the Dominican Republic on September 2nd to make direct deliveries to its customers.
He said that the company founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos "is creating a distribution center for Latin America here in the Dominican Republic."
He added that the first flight will arrive on Tuesday of next week, which demonstrates the success and growth that online shopping .
"I'm giving you the scoop, you're going to be all excited for me, my communications people, but I'm going to say it here: on September 2nd we'll have the inauguration of the first cargo flight, specifically cargo, from the company Amazon ," the official stated during an interview on the morning program on Telemicro, channel 5.
Sanz Lovatón noted that 60% of online purchases are transported by air, whereas 15 to 20 years ago it was by sea.
"However, the Dominican Republic has become an air cargo hub ," he added.

"Just last week, we inaugurated a new facility at the José Francisco Peña Gómez or Las Américas airport, a new courier terminal with modern X-ray equipment and modern thermal cameras, which will increase delivery capacity by almost 160%," he said.
