Amazon Air Cargo begins operations in the Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO – The arrival of Amazon Air Cargo will be dedicated to fulfilling air freight needs, not parcel delivery. The company states that it chose the Dominican Republic due to the country's sustained growth in exports, imports, and e-commerce.

“We are providing cargo capacity services like any other airline, not only on the Miami-Santo Domingo route, but also for the country's exporters, who needed more space to move their products,” said Alfonso Alemán, president of ALK Global Logistics, the company that chartered the Amazon plane.

Alemán explained that the service is not linked to individual parcel deliveries. “We are the company bringing in the Amazon Air Cargo . I want to emphasize that this has nothing to do with parcel delivery,” he stated after landing early Wednesday morning, September 3.

Alemán said that the growth of e-commerce and exports in the Dominican Republic was a determining factor in adding this new air frequency.

“We are very happy to be here. Today marks the inauguration of Amazon Air Cargo operations in the Dominican Republic, and that is confirmation that we are a world-class logistics hub,” he emphasized.

He explained that on this first Santo Domingo-Miami flight, the Amazon plane will be loaded with 10,000 kilos of vegetables from Dominican exporters to Miami.

The service will operate as an air cargo service, not a parcel service, and connections will be made through Miami to anywhere in the world.

He said that although it is not projected as a distribution center for the Caribbean, they could coordinate shipments to other islands if their clients require it.

The first flight that landed at 8:18 a.m. this Wednesday was piloted by Captain Enrique Arias and First Officer Valeria Orgue, who led the crew of the first Amazon Air flight to land in the Dominican Republic.

Arias explained that the pilot assignments will be on a rotating basis, but that on this occasion they were selected to inaugurate the route and represent the airline. “I am also the company's fleet manager, and that's why they sent me to represent them,” he stated.
