SANTO DOMINGO.- As interest in beachfront accommodations continues to grow, the Airbnb platform announced a new feature specifically designed to educate guests about water safety.
After a guest books accommodation with a pool or near the water, the new in-app experience will display expert-developed water safety tips and suggest questions they can ask their host about water safety measures and accommodation considerations.
These expert tips were developed in collaboration with Safe Kids Worldwide, a member of Airbnb’s Trust and Safety Advisory Coalition, and focus on educating guests to help prevent incidents. These tips range from general water safety guidelines to what to do before entering the water, and offer guidance such as:
- Never swim alone , especially in unfamiliar waters.
- Take a moment to familiarize yourself with key safety considerations, such as water depth and distribution, access points, safety signs, and any nearby rescue equipment.
- Know the emergency procedures and contacts , and be prepared to ask for help if needed.
- Avoid consuming alcohol or drugs in or near the water, such as when boating, swimming, or supervising others.
This feature is displayed to guests after booking confirmation, through automated messages with suggested questions to ask the host about the accommodation and its water safety features. The messages include questions about the accommodation's safety equipment, access points to the pool or coastal areas, and rules, conditions, or hazards related to water in or around the accommodation, according to a press release.
“While water safety incidents during Airbnb stays are very rare, we want guests to feel safe and prepared. This new product is designed to help them stay informed and feel better prepared to ensure their safety and the safety of their loved ones in the water,” said Tara Bunch, Airbnb’s global chief operating officer.
“Drownings can happen quickly and silently, without dramatic signs of distress or cries for help, but they are entirely preventable. One of the most important things a family can do when vacationing near water is to discuss and develop a water safety plan before leaving on their trip. That’s why we’re excited to partner with Airbnb to help families get the information and resources they need to support that planning and ensure that, when they arrive at their destination, children are safe while having fun,” said Torine Creppy, president of Safe Kids Worldwide.
