SANTO DOMINGO.-The Dominican Republic is listed as one of the “9 affordable Caribbean islands for a getaway”, in the selection made by the specialized portal Condé Nast Traveler.
The publication highlights that the cheapest times to travel are usually between April and June, or in November (when hurricane season is ending).
To experience the true essence of visiting the country, with a more affordable vacation, they recommend visiting Puerto Plata, Samaná or Las Terrenas.
They encourage travelers to create a customized itinerary, which could include visits to artisans in the markets. They note that “chef Inés Páez, an island resident, told Traveler that she recommends that travelers visit the Malecón Livestock Fair market on George Washington Avenue in Santo Domingo, or the Mercado Modelo on Mella Avenue, north of the Colonial Zone, a landmark on the island.”.
It also highlights that there, you can meet the local artisans, farmers, chefs and entrepreneurs who make the island so special and, while you're there, buy some affordable but well-made artisanal treats to take home.
In Las Terrenas, they say it's a little-traveled but always charming town on the Samaná peninsula; they say you'll find a small and charming city with soft sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.
"It's very walkable and has many local restaurants and a relaxed nightlife; it's also a great place for clubbing." They recommend visiting El Limón waterfall or snorkeling at the lively but relatively undeveloped Jackson Beach. (This region of the island was also recommended by Vogue in 2023, they point out.).
