SANTO DOMINGO.-The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) announced yesterday, Sunday, that it will hold public hearings to gather input from hydraulic and sanitary engineering professionals in order to reach a consensus on the final drainage design for the planned overpass on Isabel Aguiar Avenue and the tunnel on Luperón Avenue, which are part of the North-South corridor of Greater Santo Domingo.
The state agency presented the sanitary and rainwater management plan that will be implemented on the aforementioned avenues when they are being worked on as part of the solution to the traffic at those intersections with 27 de Febrero Avenue.
Amós Martínez, technical director of the institution, while participating in a meeting organized by the Dominican Association of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering (ADIS), on the occasion of commemorating World Environment Day, said that Public Works seeks to obtain a final design that solves not only the new part of the work, but also has an efficient drainage in the entire area.
“Public hearings are being held in which ADIS has made its contributions, to reach a consensus on the final design of the solution to that trench and the tunnel area,” he explained.
He stated that with this, "the MOPC is acting in a transparent and consensual manner, to provide the final solution to this very important project.".
For the drainage work to be carried out in the area, the behavior of the rains of the past 200 years is taken into account, and in particular those recorded in the month of November of the last two years.
For his part, engineer Marcelo Yánez said that a drainage system is planned for Luperón Avenue, running from Guarocuya Avenue to Cayetano Germosén Avenue, because there is currently not enough drainage to move the water.
“The plan is to carry out a mining-type process, where we will build a tunnel to construct a manhole at the lowest point of the Luperón tunnel, and connect it to the next one located in front of the offices of the Ministry of the Environment,” he said.
The meeting was attended by engineers from various fields, architects, students, MOPC staff, among others.
