SANTO DOMINGO- The public prosecutor's office reported that it arrested yesterday the owners of the Multi Muebles building that collapsed last January, an event that caused the death of one employee and injuries to three others, who were trapped in the rubble of the collapse.
Jesús María Sánchez Lantigua and Jorge Alberto Rosario Marte were arrested by court order in one of their offices, located on Pedro A. Rivera Avenue.
The head prosecutor of La Vega, Aura Luz García Martínez, explained that the suspects will be brought before the Permanent Attention Services Judicial Office within the next 48 hours on charges of involuntary manslaughter, and that they will request pretrial detention as a coercive measure. They will also seek legal action against the company.
The facts
The collapse of the building that housed the company R & S Multi Muebles, SRL occurred on January 18, on Las Carreras Street corner of Sánchez in the municipality of La Vega, La Vega province, at approximately 12:05 in the afternoon.
Following the collapse of the building, Yasiris Joaquín de Jesús, 30 years old, was killed, while three other young female employees were injured.
Authorities indicate that the evidence obtained during the investigation reasonably suggests that construction work was being carried out there without the permits of the Dominican College of Engineers and Architects (Codia), nor of the Urban Planning Department of the La Vega City Hall, which are the competent authorities to authorize any type of construction or modification.
They explain that the demolitions and modifications, in addition to having been carried out without the authorizations of the agencies provided for by the laws and regulations, were carried out with employees inside the structure, which caused several employees to be crushed among the rubble at the time of the collapse.
They specify that the defendants failed to observe the care measures or precautionary procedures.
