SANTO DOMINGO – “And one of the most important projects, one that will forever change the Dominican Republic, is the border fence with Haiti. All four phases are practically finished,” President Luis Abinader said Tuesday in his “Accountability” address to the National Congress.
The president said that the Elías Piña area has already been delivered and that the Dajabón, Jimaní, and Pedernales areas will be delivered in the coming weeks, a project which he affirmed is being built with an investment of more than 1.7 billion pesos.
“In the border provinces with Haiti, especially in the 24 km of fence in Dajabón, the theft of cattle, motorcycles and vehicles has been reduced by more than 80%.
Construction of the border wall began with the first groundbreaking ceremony by the president on February 20, 2022. The first stage included 54 kilometers, while the second part completed an extension of 173 kilometers, out of a total of 391.6 kilometers that constitutes the border line.
The project, led by the Ministry of Defense, involves the construction, in Dominican territory, of 164 kilometers of two-lane road with a width of 12 meters, which will allow the authorities to optimize patrolling in the area.
The project, in addition to a border fence along the 391.6 kilometers of the land border, includes the construction of 164 kilometers of double-track road with a width of 12 meters, six meters on each side with the fence passing through the center.
The entire route of the highway will be constantly monitored and patrolled by the corresponding national security agencies, which will always operate on the Dominican side of the border, even if they are on the outer edge of the fence.
The kilometers of border fence will be divided into 15 sections that will run through five provinces: Montecristi, Dajabón, Elías Piñas, Independencia and Pedernales.
