Several people were trapped in their vehicles after one of the side walls of the underpass at the intersection of 27 de Febrero Avenue and Máximo Gómez collapsed.
SANTO DOMINGO- The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) and the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) asked the public to avoid traveling on 27 de Febrero Avenue with Máximo Gómez, after the collapse of the side wall of the underpass located at that intersection, caused by the heavy rains that fell in Greater Santo Domingo and the National District.
The institution made the request through its social media channels. Heavy rains affecting the country caused the wall to collapse onto several vehicles traveling on the road.
The Ministry of Public Works reported that its head, Deligne Ascención, visited the area to observe the damage caused by the rains and that they will detail the measures taken by the Government to mitigate the damage caused by the atmospheric phenomenon that on Saturday caused floods and disasters in various locations across the country.
State emergency response teams have arrived at the scene to assist those affected.
Due to the effects of the tropical disturbance currently affecting the national territory, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) declared the National District (DN) and the province of Greater Santo Domingo on red alert.
Due to the potential for flash floods and river overflows, the agency increased the number of provinces under red alert to 13 and decreased the number under yellow alert to 12. In its latest situation report, five provinces remain under green alert and two are not under any type of alert.
