The award highlights his leadership in transforming Punta Cana into an international destination and his contribution to positioning the Dominican Republic in the global market
MALTA. Frank Rainieri's business career and his role in consolidating Punta Cana as one of the leading tourist destinations in the Caribbean were recognized during the 26th edition of the World Travel & Tourism Summit, organized by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).
The Chairman of the Board of the Puntacana Group received the WTTC Icon Award, a distinction that honors personalities whose work has left a significant mark on the development of destinations and the strengthening of the tourism industry.
The ceremony took place in Malta, where the international meeting is being held from Wednesday, October 7th to Friday, October 9th, with the participation of more than 1,000 delegates, including more than 200 high-level representatives from the public and private sectors.
In that context, Gloria Guevara, president and CEO of the WTTC, highlighted Rainieri's influence on the growth of national tourism activity and expressed that the achievements attained by the Dominican Republic would not have the same dimension without his leadership and commitment.
“Frank Rainieri is a true pioneer and leader in tourism. His vision helped create a complete destination and demonstrated how travel and tourism can transform communities, generate opportunities, and contribute to long-term prosperity,” said Guevara.
He also indicated that the businessman's legacy continues to inspire those who are developing new destinations and the main leaders of this sector on a global scale.
In this regard, the WTTC highlighted that Rainieri has contributed since 1969 to transforming Punta Cana into an internationally renowned destination. His investments and business management fostered the development of an industry that today constitutes one of the country's main economic drivers, attracting millions of visitors annually and generating hundreds of thousands of tourism-related jobs.
Who is Frank Rainieri?
Frank Rafael Rainieri Marranzini is a Dominican businessman and founder of the Puntacana Group, considered one of the pioneers of tourism development in the eastern region of the country. He also chairs the Puntacana Group Foundation, an organization that promotes social and environmental initiatives.
His project began in 1969, when, together with the American businessman and lawyer Theodore W. Kheel, he decided to develop a coastal area of La Altagracia that at the time had limited access and lacked the necessary infrastructure to receive visitors on a large scale.
Two years later, in 1971, the Punta Cana Club opened, an establishment with a capacity for 40 guests that laid the foundation for the area's hotel development. Subsequently, in 1984, the Punta Cana International Airport was inaugurated, a fundamental piece of infrastructure that facilitated the arrival of foreign tourists and connected the destination with other markets.

His main contributions to Dominican tourism
One of Rainieri's greatest contributions has been to drive the transformation of Punta Cana, which went from being a difficult-to-access area to becoming one of the Caribbean's leading tourist destinations. His initiative helped attract hotel investments, develop real estate projects, and expand the range of accommodations, recreation, and services available to international visitors.
He also promoted a model that integrates hotels, air connectivity, golf courses, a marina, and residential communities. This diversification helped expand investment opportunities and consolidate the Punta Cana brand in international markets.
Another of its contributions has been its commitment to environmental sustainability. Through the Grupo Puntacana Foundation, it has promoted programs for the conservation of natural resources, the protection of ecosystems, and community development, with the aim of linking economic growth with environmental preservation.
In the social sphere, his career has also been related to education, health and welfare initiatives for the communities of the La Altagracia province.
International projection and recognition
Rainieri's influence has extended beyond the Dominican business sphere. His involvement in organizations linked to tourism and the private sector, as well as his contributions to the development of sustainable destinations, have allowed him to showcase the Punta Cana experience on the international stage.
Throughout his career he has received various distinctions, including recognition as Hotelier of the Year by the Caribbean Hotel Association, a lifetime achievement award given by the Caribbean Hotel & Resort Investment Summit and the appointment as ambassador of Sustainable Tourism by the World Tourism Organization in 2021.
In October 2025, the Dominican Government also awarded him the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sánchez and Mella, in the grade of Grand Cross Silver Plaque, for his contributions to tourism development for more than five decades and his humanitarian work.
With the WTTC Icon Award, his career once again receives international recognition, this time for his contribution to the evolution of Punta Cana and the positioning of the Dominican Republic as a world-class tourist destination.
A legacy for the tourism industry
The WTTC Icon Award recognizes individuals whose career has significantly influenced the evolution of destinations, institutions, or travel-related businesses through initiatives that promote quality standards and broaden their reach and impact for future generations.
