During the celebration of Republic Day, Ambassador Maffettone highlighted the growth of Italian investment, the opening of a new air connection, and the strengthening of economic and human ties between the two countries
SANTO DOMINGO – The Italian Embassy stated that relations between Italy and the Dominican Republic are going through a period of economic and commercial strengthening, marked by a record of foreign direct investment and the upcoming opening of a direct air connection between Rome and Santo Domingo.
During the celebration of the Italian Republic Day, the diplomatic headquarters reported that Italian foreign direct investment (FDI) reached US$371 million in 2025, the highest figure recorded by that country in Dominican territory in its entire history.
According to the Embassy, this result reflects the growing interest of Italian companies in investing in the Dominican Republic and consolidates the presence of that European country in strategic sectors of the national economy.
Direct flight Rome-Santo Domingo
The Embassy also highlighted ITA Airways' announcement of a direct flight between Rome and Santo Domingo, scheduled to begin operations in November 2026.
According to the diplomatic mission, the new connection will facilitate tourism, business and cultural exchange between both nations, as well as strengthen the mobility of investors, visitors and the Italian and Dominican communities.
Economic and human relations
During the ceremony, the Italian ambassador, Sergio Maffettone, emphasized that the bilateral relationship is based not only on the growth of investments, but also on the historical and human ties that unite both countries.
The diplomat noted that the Dominican community residing in Italy is one of the largest established in that European nation, while the Italian community based in the Dominican Republic maintains an active participation in various sectors of the economy.
He also maintained that the contribution of Italian citizens and their descendants has left a significant mark on the country's cultural, economic, and social development.
For his part, the Deputy Minister of Bilateral Foreign Policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Caraballo, highlighted during the event the historic relationship of friendship between both nations and valued the role of Italy as a constant ally in the development process of the Dominican Republic.
Celebration in the Colonial City
The Italian Republic Day celebration was held in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo with the participation of Dominican authorities, representatives of the diplomatic corps, businesspeople, and members of the Italian community residing in the country.
The Embassy reported that the activity included an artistic presentation by violinist Olen Cesari, pianist Michel Rodi and singer Fabia Salvucci, as well as a gastronomic display inspired by Italian culinary tradition.
