A city made entirely of wood is possible thanks to architectural and technological advancements. Atrium Ljungberg, the company behind the project, expects Stockholm Wood City in Stockholm, Sweden, to begin construction in 2025, with the first buildings completed by 2027.
This is how it is planned to become the world's largest wooden city. It will have an impressive area of 250,000 square meters and will incorporate various types of construction. There will be 7,000 offices and 2,000 homes, as well as diverse shops, businesses, and restaurants, to foster social and economic activity.

Beyond its obvious sustainability characteristic, wood – compared to steel and concrete – has a lower environmental impact and, especially during periods of intense wildfires and heat waves in the Northern Hemisphere – is more fire-resistant.

Furthermore, it is a renewable, recyclable, and carbon-neutral or positive product. It provides raw materials for essential products such as housing, furniture, paper, energy, and chemicals, replacing, in many cases, the use of non-renewable products derived from mining and fossil fuels. With new technologies, such as nanotechnology and biorefineries, countless other applications are being added.
Timber structures offer numerous benefits for the environment, human health, and overall well-being. Many studies have shown that timber structures have superior air quality, lead to lower stress levels and higher productivity, and can store carbon dioxide. Stockholm Wood City also incorporates several additional environmental advantages beyond the inherent benefits of wood.
There are other examples around the world of cities with a large presence of wooden housing, but the one to be built in Sweden will be entirely constructed with this material.
