SANTO DOMINGO.– Although there were no fatalities this time, unlike last June when two people died, a second SUV plunged into an excavation pit early Thursday morning at a construction project located on Anacaona Avenue, near the corner of Privada Street, in the Mirador Sur sector of the National District.
Rescuers who arrived at the scene reported that the driver was rescued alive and immediately taken to a health center for medical attention.
Noticias SIN reported that during construction, New Jersey barriers were installed on Anacaona Avenue, but on the other street there are only lower walls and a zinc fence, precisely in the section where the vehicle fell.
This is the second such incident in the country in less than a month. Last June, another vehicle crashed at the intersection of Roberto Pastoriza and José Tapia Brea avenues in the Evaristo Morales neighborhood of Santo Domingo, killing two people and injuring two others.
The General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transport (Digesset) explained that the incident occurred when the driver of the SUV lost control and fell into the hole dug for the construction of a building.
The woman was rescued alive and transported by a 9-1-1 System unit to an emergency center.
First case
In June, two people died and two others were injured after their vehicle fell into a hole at a construction site in the Evaristo Morales sector of the National District.
On the subject, some voices were raised, such as that of engineer Teodoro Tejada, who considered that the accident could have been avoided with the establishment of retaining walls.
The former president of the Dominican College of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors (CODIA) lamented what happened and blamed the authorities responsible for ensuring the safety of citizens.
“It is truly regrettable that this happened, but this is the irresponsibility of the General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transportation (Digesett), the Ministry of Housing, and the municipalities where these multi-story buildings are being constructed, since they do not require adequate retaining walls to prevent these types of accidents,” he stated.
For its part, the construction company Roaldi, responsible for the work, assured that said project has all the corresponding permits issued by the institutions responsible for them, as well as the current construction license issued by the Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (Mivhed), complying with the provisional authorization for the execution of the excavations.
