SANTO DOMINGO.– The Civil Aviation Board (JAC) reported on the progress of negotiations for air transport services with the Government of Jamaica, with the aim of promoting the sector, improving trade, and generating new opportunities in commercial aviation for the country's productive sectors.
“The negotiations with the Civil Aviation Authority of Jamaica will allow us to establish new and more operations to and from Dominican territory, and with this, continue with the objective of increasing the country's connectivity,” said José Ernesto Marte Piantini, president of the organization.
In that regard, the official reiterated that the negotiations on commercial aviation with the Government of Jamaica will boost the services of national and foreign operators, thus giving Dominican travelers more options to visit.
“We are convinced that these negotiations will be very beneficial for the sector, as they will cover multiple issues related to air passenger and cargo transport services,” he said.
He specified that both countries (Dominican Republic and Jamaica) have a great interest in making rapid progress in the negotiations, for which reason a work schedule has been established in a virtual format.
The Dominican delegation participating in the negotiations was made up of Antonio Yapor, member of the JAC plenary and president of the Air Services Agreements Commission; Paola Aimée Plá Puello, secretary of the plenary; María Luisa Hernández, coordinator of International Agreements and Juberkis Luciano Familia, in charge of the Air Transport Department of the JAC.
The Jamaican delegation was represented by Leroy Lindsay, Chairman of the Air Policy Committee; Michelle Walker, Deputy Attorney General; Karen Thompson, Research Manager of the Civil Aviation Authority of Jamaica; Tanya Bedward, Principal Director of the Ministry of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport; Jodi Munn-Barrow, Ministry of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport; Chenee Russell-Robinson, Manager, Air Policy Secretariat of the Ministry of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport; and Shama Campbell, International Policy Officer, Ministry of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport.

During the third ordinary session of this year, the members of the plenary learned of the request for new special permits to incorporate new operations into the Dominican territory, reported the president of the JAC, after learning of the request from Sky High Aviation Services, Sunwing Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier and United Parcel Service.
In that regard, the plenary session was informed of the request for a Special Permit from the national air operator Sky High Aviation Services, to operate 79 round-trip flights, from March 19 to September 18, 2024, with a frequency of three weekly flights, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays on the Santo Domingo/El Salvador/Santo Domingo route.
It also learned of the request for another Special Permit from the foreign air operator Sunwing Airlines, to fly on the routes: Newark/Punta Cana/Newark; Buffalo/Punta Cana/Buffalo; Detroit/Punta Cana/Detroit; Detroit/Punta Cana/Cincinnati; Detroit/Punta Cana/Detroit; Cincinnati/Punta Cana/Cincinnati and Cincinnati/Punta Cana/Cincinnati, from February 17, 2024 to April 7, 2024.
Similarly, the members of the organization were informed of the request from the foreign air operator Frontier, to operate 202 round-trip flights on the routes: Cleveland/Punta Cana/Orlando; Orlando/Punta Cana/Cleveland; Philadelphia/Punta Cana/St. Louis; St. Louis/Punta Cana/Philadelphia; San Juan/Punta Cana/Cleveland; San Juan/Punta Cana/St. Louis; St. Louis/Punta Cana/San Juan and Cleveland/Punta Cana/San Juan, during the period from February 1 to April 15, 2024.
They also learned of Delta Air Lines' requests to operate flights on the following routes: Fort Myers/Santo Domingo/Atlanta; Atlanta/Santo Domingo/Fort Myers and Sarasota/Santo Domingo/Atlanta, from March 8, 2024 to March 10, 2024.
Finally, the members of the plenary were informed of the request for a Special Permit from United Parcel Services, to carry out cargo flights on the San Juan/Santo Domingo/Miami route, starting on March 4, 2024.
